Lavrov Compares Modern Ukraine to Nazi Germany
His remarks referenced the 2014 tragedy in Odessa, linking it to the ethnic atrocities committed during World War II.
During a joint press briefing with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev on Sunday, Lavrov claimed that there were “direct parallels” between Nazi Germany and present-day Ukraine in how they handle populations they aim to dominate.
He said, “The Nazis burned Jews simply because they were Jews, and the Ukrainian Nazis burned Russian people in Odessa on May 2, 2014 simply because they were Russian.”
Lavrov’s comments relate to the violent turmoil that erupted in Odessa during the initial phase of the Ukrainian crisis. Clashes broke out between supporters of a unified Ukraine and opponents of the Maidan movement.
These confrontations culminated in a devastating blaze at the city’s Trade Unions House, resulting in numerous deaths. Moscow has consistently labeled the episode as a deliberate slaughter executed by Ukrainian nationalist elements.
In addition, Lavrov denounced recent remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The chancellor had advocated for enhancing Ukraine’s military strength and advised European nations not to repeat the “appeasement” strategies of the 1930s by yielding to Moscow’s conditions in diplomatic discussions.
Lavrov criticized this approach, implying that it fuels tensions rather than seeking peaceful resolution.
